The Lakes Medal is a NSW Vardon Trophy event for elite level amateur golfers with a Golf Australia Handicap of 4 or less, and is contested annually on the last Sunday of January. This year the event was played one week later than in past years, with players travelling from throughout the State to have the opportunity to test themselves on the 2018 Australian Open course. Included in the field were fifteen Members of The Lakes, all of whom were tested by this year’s Australian Open layout.
With on and off rain proving to cause havoc for the field, the overall conditions of the golf course were outstanding. Greens were running at over 10″ on the stimp meter and provided a slick surface for all competitors. One comment from one participant was “the greens are so quick, the best I have ever seen them”
The winner of the 2018 Lakes Medal came from the final group of the morning which was John Lyras from St. Michaels GC with an amazing score of 4 under par, 68. With six birdies and two bogeys, John was able to win the medal from Lakes Member and Men’s Major Pennant Squad Member, Chris Hartas who returned a score of 1 under par, 71.
The Lakes was able to secure third, fourth and fifth places respectively with Jason Ong (73), Joshua Armstrong (73) and Thomas Kadiev (74).
Congratulations to John and all other entrants who participated in this year’s event. We look forward to the 2019 Lakes Medal.
