In Round 2 of the Men’s Interclub Pennant competition, The Lakes were up against Cromer this week who were coming off a win the previous week. A win for The Lakes was necessary to keep our fate in our own hands, and we achieved that with a 4.5 to 3.5 win.
Gavin Lesnie got The Lakes off to a solid start with an early point, winning 7/6. Gavin only lost one hole, other than finding many fairways and greens and making pars – didn’t find any trouble – making clutch putts and dominated his opponent.
James Hawkes played well all round and applied immense pressure on his opponent and was able to win comfortably 7/5.
Unfortunately Mark Leo, Allen Rodrigues and Allan Pemberton were unable to get wins which meant the score was in Cromer’s favour by 3-2.
Playing number 1, Oscar Zerbst’ match was tight and he found himself 2 down through 8 holes. Birdies at 9, 10, 11 and a stiffed shot at 12 saw him turn it around to go to 2 up. He held on from there to win 2&1
After a slow start and going down early, Adrian Marafioti started to play some solid golf to make the turn 1up. His opponent then got hot and took the lead after 13. Adrian was able to make some clutch up and downs to keep the match all square coming down 18 when he holed a 15ft putt for par to halve the match. Impressive result at that!
I was a little off today with my ball striking but my short game kept me in the match. Chipping in for par for a half, followed by a 15ft putt for par for a half saw me get it back to 1 down after the 15th. A birdie at 16 got it back to square and I won 17 and 18 to get a 2up victory.
NSW beat Moore Park at home today which puts them at the top of our group with The Lakes and Cromer in 2nd place on 1 point each. We play Moore Park next week at NSW Golf Club.
